Our Keynote Speaker:
Vikas Jhingran PhD
2007 World Champion of Public Speaking
Vikas Jhingran, PhD is grateful that his life continues to be an ongoing journey to reach his true potential. Vikas grew up in the suburbs of the city of Kolkata, India. As a child, Vikas was not a very good student, though he consistently was told he had a lot of potential. Through constant work, focus and desire, Vikas was able to compete with the best students in the world and study at the greatest technical institutions in the world. Vikas moved to the United States to pursue graduate studies at Texas A&M and a Doctorate in Oceanic Engineering from the coveted Massachussetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.). Vikas has since been living in the U.S. and works at Shell Oil company leading teams of engineers on most complex deep sea oil drilling mega projects. He has authored and co-authored over twenty technical papers, and has spoken at many technical conferences.
Vikas has been a member of Toastmasters International since 2002. While working in the US, he noticed that he was being left behind because of his poor communications skills. Again, Vikas approached this challenge with gusto, joining Toastmasters, practicing his skills with Toastmasters educational program, and eventually winning the World Championship of Public Speaking in 2007, beating out more than 20,000 other speakers over six months of competition. He continues to attend Toastmasters club meetings and continues to improve his speaking skills. Despite having no background in communication, never participating in debates or speaking classes in school and college, he has developed into a sought after speaker. He always is amused that a non-native speaker, an engineer to boot, goes around the world teaching people how to give presentations and speeches . All of these opportunities help him grow not only as a corporate leader but also as a speaker and out-of-the box thinker.
Vikas still holds an Indian passport and is close to his Indian roots and heritage. Vikas serves on the board of Foundation of India Studies, a non profit organization that promotes education and awareness on India. He is a graduate of Leadership Houston and continues to be involved with the organization.
